Get Smart

Learning Link Scotland secured a five-year investment through the Big Lottery Fund to carry out a programme of practice development and support called ‘Get Smart’. The overall aim of the project is to support and strengthen the learning community of voluntary adult education providers and their partners, providing intelligence for and about the sector. As part of the project we will develop a new website offering up to date information about policy and practice development, opportunities for members to network and showcase their projects, as well as relevant hands-on resources.

Strategic Partnership Agreement

Learning Link Scotland have negotiated a Strategic Partnership Agreement with the Scottish Government Education and Lifelong Learning, Further and Adult Education Directorate in 2009/10 and anticipate subsequent development for future years. This will enhance the policy work of Learning Link Scotland’s network, representing the interests of the voluntary adult education and learning sector and highlighting the challenges faced by our members.

Learning Link Scotland Reflective Seminars

Learning Link Scotland will host a series of seminars this year supported by Learning Connections, Scottish Government. The seminars, “Reflection and Deliberation on 21st Century Adult Education and Learning in Scotland”, will compliment the practice and policy work, forming part of the national event in September, AGM in October and regional events around the country for Learning Link Scotland members. The aim is to engage high calibre thinkers for their input and for participants to reflect and learn about the issues which affect adult learning and delivery to incorporate new thinking and vision into practices. These issues range from the perspective of Society and Democracy, Fairness and Equality, Wealth and Poverty, Health and Wellbeing.

Explaining the Difference – Outcomes focused project

Learning Link Scotland (LLS) in partnership with Evaluation Support Scotland (ESS) and supported by Scottish Government, are working on a pilot project specifically focussing on how to articulate the outcomes of the Voluntary Adult Learning Sector within the context of National Outcomes in order to develop bespoke sector orientated evaluation tools and methods. The project runs over the course of 10 months and cover 6 project sessions. The 7 participating organisations are: AMINA, the Muslim Women Resource Centre, CraigOwl, Dumfries & Galloway Federation of CVS, Lead Scotland, Learning Link Scotland, Rosemount Lifelong Learning, and WEA Scotland. The learning from this project will be shared with our wider learning community through the roll-out of our capacity building programme, “Get Smart”.

Embedding the Curriculum Wheel

Learning Link Scotland and the WEA were awarded the contract for the “Wheel Embedding” Project by the Scottish Government. Jayne Stuart, Director of Learning Link Scotland will be leading the project, and Shirley Howitt, WEA Area Tutor Organiser, Glasgow will link with the WEA nationally and act as the main point of contact for liaison. The main aim of the support is to:

  • raise awareness of the potential contribution of the Wheel to literacies learning and teaching by supporting development of innovative use;

  • support literacies partnerships to promote and encourage use of the Wheel by developing and delivering training to suit their local context;

  • promote and encourage use of the Wheel across a range of community learning and development practitioners;

  • disseminate innovative use of the Wheel to other partnerships and literacies providers in Scotland
